Save Money by Using Your Scissors

lotion tubes
...and no, we're not talking about clipping coupons.

We had a theory that a lot of product, such as lotion that comes in tubes like these, can remain in the tube even after squeeze, squeeze, squeezing out as much as possible.  We tested our theory on some heavy-duty hand lotion (well, not really scientific testing, but our own personal use) and found that by snipping the top of the tube off with a pair of scissors, we got an additional 4 to 5 uses out of each tube!

Save some money by getting more uses out of old tubes before having to go buy new ones.  This isn't limited to just lotions, it is also a way to get the last traces of other products, like toothpaste or sunscreen, out of their tubes, too.

Hey - it's the little things that can add up to some big savings!

Preventing Nonpoint Source Pollution

What is nonpoint source pollution?  It occurs when precipitation (rain or melting snow) carries both natural and human-made pollutants through the ground and into the water supply.  Nonpoint source pollution does not come from one measurable source and can also be described as the combination of all the pollution every person creates in their daily life - a little spill here, a few drips there.

According to the US EPA, both urban and suburban areas increase the amount of pollutants that are carried into our waters.  Hard surfaces, like pavement, prevent rain water and melting snow from seeping into the ground, thus creating a greatly increased volume of storm water runoff.  The most common pollutants "include:
  • Sediment
  • Oil, grease and toxic chemicals from motor vehicles
  • Pesticides and nutrients from lawns and gardens
  • Viruses, bacteria and nutrients from pet waste and failing septic systems
  • Road salts
  • Heavy metals from roof shingles, motor vehicles and other sources
  • Thermal pollution from dark impervious surfaces such as streets and rooftops
These pollutants can harm fish and wildlife populations, kill native vegetation, foul drinking water, and make recreational areas unsafe and unpleasant."

Our pollution prevention funnels and spouts are made with recycled plastic and are the perfect tools for combating nonpoint source pollution in your own backyard.  The full line of pollution prevention products are designed to keep potentially harmful fluids, like motor oil or plant fertilizer, in the containers which they belong.  Not only that, they make life a little bit easier by allowing for effortless pouring and spill-free fluid transfer.

Weisenbach is proud to announce that many of our pollution prevention funnels and spouts are now available for purchase online, with no minimum quantities.  Please visit RecyclingIsCool

Caps Can Do™ Recycle Plastic Caps, Save Wildlife

Weisenbach Recycled Products is rolling out a new program to collect plastic bottle caps made from polypropylene (#5 plastic or PP) called Caps Can Do™.  This new program helps to solve a big problem: reducing the amount of plastic litter while educating consumers, protecting wildlife, and finding new uses for a material that is rarely recycled in the United States.

Many times consumers are told to put their plastic bottles in the recycling bin, and to toss the plastic cap into the trash.  This is because the bottles are made of a different material than their caps are.  While the bottles themselves can easily be recycled in most areas, there are currently a very limited number of facilities that will recycle the caps.

The small caps are easily overlooked and often end up as litter.  Once in the environment, the caps can be mistaken by animals and birds as an easy meal.  The results can be tragic.  Even if the caps make it to a landfill, they can still pose a threat to birds that scavenge through the trash looking for food.

Weisenbach is looking to partner with zoos, aquariums, parks, wildlife centers and other such environmental-minded organizations to help educate consumers, encourage personal responsibility, and of course, provide an opportunity to recycle all of those caps!

You can learn more, including how to recycle your own caps and what specific types of materials we can accept, at our website: CapsCanDo.org or on Facebook , keyword CapsCanDo.

Recyclemania® 2011 Kicks-Off in September

Recyclemania Old Style LogoWhat is Recyclemania®?  It is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities.  Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked in each of four different categories. With each week's reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more.

Weisenbach Recycled Products is proud to partner with RecycleMania® to offer their officially branded gear. Participating colleges & universities can purchase in-stock or custom-order RecycleMania® items such as t-shirts, mugs, pencils, pens, flying discs, reusable bags and more.

These materials can be purchased through our convenient online store at Recycling Is Cool. Most stock items with the RecycleMania® logo can be shipped within days.  Schools also have the option to order custom items from our broader selection of merchandise incorporating the RecycleMania® logo with their own campus-specific message or recycling logo. Most items include recycled content or are produced in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The store is open for business now!  Watch for exciting new products coming in September!

Cap Collection Containers for Easy Plastic Cap Recycling

Caps Can Do Lunchroom Cap Recycling Bin Weisenbach Recycled Products is now offering Caps Can Do™ collection bins to make recycling plastic caps easier.  These plastic cap recycling containers also help encourage others to recycle their own plastic caps, helping to eliminate even more plastic from the waste stream, and helping to spread some polypropylene awareness!

As the transparent collection bins fill up, they become an eye-catching attraction with the variety of multi-colored plastic caps collected for recycling.  People will naturally be drawn to the colorful bins and want to learn what they are all about.

  • Caps Can Do™ Lunchroom Collection Bin (pictured) - holds approximately 1000 caps

Thinking Green for Halloween
Thinking green on Halloween is as simple as 1-2-3!  When considering products for your Green Halloween®, look for quality items made from natural ingredients/materials that will be enjoyed long past November1st.  It is also a good idea to look for items that can be reused or recycled.  If you choose food, look for healthy (or healthier) choices. Additionally, look for products that meet one or more of the following"3G" criteria:
1) Good for People
  • Treats are organic or pesticide-free
  • Food items are made from healthy and whole ingredients and do not contain high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, trans-fats, artificial colors or flavors
  • Non-food items are made from safe materials and do not pose and suspected immediate or long-term health risks
2) Good for the Planet
  • Items are produced with earth-friendly practices, such as by organic farming
  • Preference is given to locally grown or made goods, which alleviates the environmental impact from shipping.  (Get to know local farmers and shop with them!)
  • Non-food items are made from earth-friendly materials such as sustainably harvested wood or recycled materials
  • The items include as little packaging as possible
3) Good for the local or global community
  • The people making the items earn fair wages, exclude child labor and work in safe conditions (Ideally, imported goods are certified Fair Trade).  The manufacturer may give a percentage of profits to a worthy cause.

Did You Know Weisenbach Recycled Products Did That?

You may know a thing or two about Weisenbach Recycled Products, but did you know that we offer such a wide variety of recycled and environmentally preferable products that, chances are, there are at least a few items that will make our customers say, "I didn't know Weisenbach did that!"

At Weisenbach, we always strive to bring the best products to you.  We will not simply promote the latest fad items without first thoroughly researching the product to determine if it truly meets our green standards.  Many products simply do not pass muster.  If we can not find a product that is up to snuff, we will either create it ourselves, or have one of our trusted manufacturing partners create specific materials just for us.  For example:
Recycled Hand Fans
Did you know that the paperboard used to make our hand fans (a Weisenbach signature product) is made exclusively for us?  We're talking 100% post-consumer recycled, 100% made in the USA paperboard.  Paperboard that enhances any design you create. Unlike a lot of the other stuff that is out there, the front of our paperboard is white and coated with a low-lustre finish while the back is un-coated and is also white.  This creates a dressier appearance, and is also quite useful, as it provides a place to collect email addresses, phone numbers and Facebook information from friends at your special event.

Our environmental education efforts don't end with recycled paper.  At Weisenbach, we also strive to promote and encourage pollution prevention (P2).  One often overlooked source of water pollution is nonpoint source pollution.  This is basically the pollution that occurs from everyday splashes and small spills that end up getting washed down the drain, such as motor oil that is accidentally spilled when someone does an oil change at their home.

Oil Collection Jugs Did you know that Weisenbach also offers used oil jugs for curbside collection?  Our oil collection jugs are manufactured from at least 50% post-consumer high density polyethylene (HDPE-2) that comes from other plastic containers (primarily detergent bottles) collected at curbside.  With our used oil jugs and P2 accessories, customers can do everything from changing their own oil, draining their oil filter, and setting the used oil (and the oil filter) out for curbside collection...without spilling a drop.

Some of our custom pollution prevention accessories include FitBig® funnels, which fit right in our used oil jugs, for clean, easy pouring or oil filter draining, and zip-close bags that fit around the jug neck to secure used oil filters for recycling.  To ensure a safe seal, customers can also purchase thumb lock caps.  These caps are child-resistant and compliant with Department of Transportation drop test specifications.   So even if you don't have curbside oil collection in your area, you can rest assured that your used oil will remain tightly secured inside the jug as it is transported to your local recycling facility.

These are just a few examples of some of the lesser known things that Weisenbach Recycled Products has to offer.  At Weisenbach, we currently offer nearly 1,000 recycled and environmentally preferable products to meet your needs.   We own 4 patents, 15 registered trademarks, and we have another 10 trademarks pending approval.  Our mad scientists are always working hard to create new products and materials that meet the ever-changing demands of our business and our world.

100% Post-Consumer Recycled Glass Awards
at Weisenbach Recycled Products

At Weisenbach, we collect empty beer, wine and spirits bottles from several area bars & restaurants on a weekly basis.  The glass is brought back to our Columbus, Ohio workshop where it is cleaned, color-sorted and crushed in our industrial glass crusher.  The crushed glass is called "cullet".  The cullet is then melted down in the furnaces of our glass artist, who creates a variety of shapes and sculptures that become our exclusive line of ReAward® 100% post-consumer recycled glass awards.

The photo here shows one of our top sellers, the Round Disk ReAward®.  These awards are available in 3 sizes (small 5-6", medium 7-8", large 9-10") and three colors (clear, cobalt blue, emerald green).  Each award can be ordered with custom sand-blast etching.  Our artists carefully etch each award by hand, ensuring a unique quality and incomparable beauty that is hard to top.

From start to finish - the whole process is done in Columbus, Ohio.  Made in the USA.  Now that is something to cheer about, so raise your glasses to sustainability!
