This Recycled Stuff is for the Birds

The Recycle-Bottle Bird Feeder helps put used plastic soda bottles to a good new use. Simply fill a clean, empty bottle with seed and twist on the recycled plastic feeder attachment.  Poke a couple of holes to attach the hanger and this feeder is good to go. Your custom imprint goes on a package insert, which also doubles as a bookmark, printed on 100% recycled paperboard using soy inks.

Personally, I like this feeder because it helps to conserve birdseed, too. At our home, we purchased a large, expensive wooden feeder at the store. It seems like each time we fill it, we look outside and see a large bird (or sometimes a squirrel) tossing the seed about, looking for the particular ones that it wants and sending everything else to the ground. The feeder is emptied by the end of the day. By contrast, this feeder has a smaller seed reservoir, which helps keep the seed in the feeder for all of the birds to enjoy!

Another great way to both recycle and to conserve your birdseed supply is by storing seed in empty plastic milk jugs. These jugs make filling feeders a lot easier, and since they have secure-fitting lids, they also keep unwanted pests like bugs & mice out of your seed. The FitFill® Birdseed Funnel is unique in its ability to attach directly onto the empty jug. This allows you to have both hands free while you are pouring, making seed transfer easier and cleaner.

The FitFill® Birdseed funnel is also available at Wild Birds Unlimited stores and other specialty retailers.

Please Vote to Make a Giant Difference - Recycle Plastic Caps

We humbly ask our readers to help us spread awareness about the big problems that little pieces of plastic can cause.

2.5 million plastic bottles are discarded every hour. The bottle may get recycled, but the plastic caps are a giant problem for marine life, birds, and for the environment. Weisenbach just received a patent for a pollution prevention product that we make from plastic bottle caps. Our program involves public collection sites for the caps that will provide wildlife protection and litter prevention awareness while inviting community involvement in the collection and recycling process.

The Green Giant ‘Green Award’ will help us divert and recycle plastic caps by creating very cool, useful green products – a giant solution for a giant problem. Watch the Video and Vote!

Weisenbach Recycled Products Makes Big Play for Green Football Fans

Exclusive football shaped recycling bin delivers a winning combination. It's easy to spot, easy to access, and helps keep the stadium Green. Made of recycled plastic and ready to customize with team logos; fans won't pass the chance to recycle bottles and cans.

The always innovative Weisenbach Recycled Products scores with a new recycling bin that is sure to make big plays in cleaning up at sporting events, on campuses, and anywhere that football fans gather to watch a game and enjoy a beverage from a bottle or a can.

The new bottle and can recycling bin looks just like a football and stands at an eye-catching 43 x 24 inches. Themed design and sturdy construction make it easy for fans to take care of their empties and get back to the action on the field.

Just like the game of football, it's made in the USA. And with true American ingenuity, it's crafted of recycled HDPE (High Density Polyethylene - #2). So while it makes recycling accessible to fans, it also demonstrates what can be made from recycled plastic.

"Football is fun. Drinking a cold beverage is fun. And recycling is fun." Says Dan Weisenbach, president and founder of the 30 year-old Columbus company that is the exclusive source for the football shaped recycle bin. "Recycling is mostly about changing human behavior from a Throw it out and get more mindset to a Toss it towards making something useful mindset. When we make that behavior easy for folks; when we make it accessible and fun, it becomes a habit - a new behavioral norm."

Colleges, sports venues, and public facilities of all kinds are working hard to make recycling a habit for students, fans, and visitors. The new football bin offers features that facilitate collecting bottles and cans in these large facilities. The surface is easy to customize with team logos and decals. They come clearly marked with the chasing arrows recycling symbol and have cutouts encircled with the words "Recycle bottles and cans" around an opening that is sized to accept just those containers. The pointed top also prevents trash and garbage from being placed on top of the bins; a common problem with flat-topped recycling containers.

‘Lighten Up’ Theme Selected for Central Ohio Earth Day 2011

Green Columbus November 3, 2010

‘Lighten Up’ Theme Selected for Central Ohio Earth Day 2011

Columbus, Ohio – November 3, 2010 – Green Columbus, the local nonprofit responsible for coordinating and mobilizing the largest volunteer turnout for Earth Day service projects in the country, has selected “Lighten Up” as the theme for Earth Day 2011. “Lighten Up” will be the fifth observance of Earth Day organized by Green Columbus (and the 41st observance globally). Last year's event, The Update, involved nearly 4,000 volunteers and 129 worksites across Central Ohio, the largest coordinated event of its kind in the country.

Earth Day 2011: Lighten Up will continue the two-part, Columbus-style, model with volunteer opportunities over the weekend of April 16 & 17, and a celebration on Saturday, April 23. These events straddle the calendar Earth Day, which falls on April 22 every year. As in years past, volunteers will work together to create a more sustainable region by planting trees, installing rain gardens, restoring local ecosystems, and creating or reviving community food gardens. The entire event – the worksite weekend and the celebration – is designed to raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage implementation of solutions. The service projects provide tangible benefits to local communities and the celebration includes educational components as well as entertainment and cultural events to gratify a wide audience.

When asked about this year's theme, Erin Chacey, Green Columbus's new Director said that “The 'Lighten Up' was chosen for two reasons. First, to invite people to calculate their environmental footprint and encourage them to lighten their impact by taking any number of fairly simple, often cash conserving, and Earth respecting actions. Second, it reflects a new approach to discussing environmental issues, a break from the 'gloom and doom' message that has proved unsuccessful at encouraging a wider audience to engage in sustainable practices.” The theme also continues the tradition of naming central Ohio Earth Day events after Beastie Boys songs.

Area businesses, organizations and individuals wishing to realize an environmental service project, volunteer, sponsor the event, or promote their environmentally friendly business or product at the celebration are encouraged to contact the director, Erin Chacey, at erin@greencbus.org

About Green Columbus
Green Columbus exists to promote sustainable living in Central Ohio and globally by 1) providing forums for environmental groups, citizens and others to interact. 2) raising awareness about environmental issues and what can be done to address them, and 3) encouraging participation in action oriented green events. More information is available at www.greencbus.org .

100% Post-Consumer Recycled Glass Awards
at Weisenbach Recycled Products

At Weisenbach, we collect empty beer, wine and spirits bottles from several area bars & restaurants on a weekly basis.  The glass is brought back to our Columbus, Ohio workshop where it is cleaned, color-sorted and crushed in our industrial glass crusher.  The crushed glass is called "cullet".  The cullet is then melted down in the furnaces of our glass artist, who creates a variety of shapes and sculptures that become our exclusive line of ReAward® 100% post-consumer recycled glass awards.

The photo here shows one of our top sellers, the Round Disk ReAward®.  These awards are available in 3 sizes (small 5-6", medium 7-8", large 9-10") and three colors (clear, cobalt blue, emerald green).  Each award can be ordered with custom sand-blast etching.  Our artists carefully etch each award by hand, ensuring a unique quality and incomparable beauty that is hard to top.

From start to finish - the whole process is done in Columbus, Ohio.  Made in the USA.  Now that is something to cheer about, so raise your glasses to sustainability!

Recycled Glass Sculptures 100% post-consumer
